Translate:

Translation (Tahereh Saffarzadeh): O, mankind! Verily, We created you from a male and female [Adam and Eve] and appointed for you tribes and nations to be known to each other [by specified characteristics] Verily, in Allah's Sight the most honorable of you is the most pious of you; and Allah is the Informed Owner of Knowledge.

Translation (M.H. Shakir): you men! surely We have created you of a male and a female, and made you tribes and families that you may know each other; surely the most honorable of you with Allah is the one among you most careful (of his duty); surely Allah is Knowing, Aware.

Interpretation:

Tafsir-e-Nemouneh (Exemplary) in Brief , Vol. 6

13- O, PEOPLE! WE HAVE CREATED YOU FROM A MALE AND A FEMALE, AND MADE YOU NATIONS AND TRIBES, IN ORDER TO KNOW EACH OTHER. VERILY THE MOST HONOURABLE AMONG YOU IN THE SIGHT OF ALLAH ARE THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE MOST PIOUS, AND ALLAH IS ALL-KNOWING ALL-AWARE.

PIETY HAS HIGHEST HUMAN VALUE
VERSE NO.13
In the previous verses, believers were addressed, but in the above verse all mankind have been aimed at:-
``O, people! We have created you all from a male and a female - i.e. Adam and Eve.''
So all of you are the offsprings of one root and one race, and there is no room for showing pride to one another because of race, tribe, or nation.
Not only believers are brethren and sisters, that all people have been created from one father and one mother, and are therefore brethren in reality, and no one is better than the other in the sight of God except those who are more pious. Such difference, as tribes, race, nation, and colour are convenient marks, by which we may find each other, and know one another.
Through the above verse, all the advantages and privileges have been crossed with a cancelling red line, except piety which is God-fearing and avoiding evil.
In the conquest of Mecca; Balal who was a negro slave freed by prophet and then converted, as per order of the prophet, went on the roof of KAABEH and called people to congregational prayer.
ATAB-IBN-ACID a pagan Arab said:- ``Thanks to God that, my father died and did not hear the voice of the crow from that sacred place.''
HARITH-IBN-HESHAM, another heathen too said; ``Did Mohammad not find a better one than that black crow, for such an important appointment!?''
They said so because, values in their sight were only the false material values.
Many a time our prophet said:- ``O, People! Your God is one, and your father is one. Arab has no superiority over AJAM (NON ARAB) and nor tawny is better than the negro, except for their piety and virtues - A believer is higher than a Moslim and a pious is higher than a believer.''
