Translation (Tahereh Saffarzadeh): And a person who cannot afford to free a slave must go on fast for two months successively before they touch each other, but if a person is sick and cannot fast he should free sixty of the poor; this is in order that you may find Faith for Allah and His Messenger and get rid of these customs of the Time of Ignorance. These are Allah's Limits; and for the disbelievers there is a painful Torment.

Translation (M.H. Shakir): But whoever has not the means, let him fast for two months successively before they touch each other; then as for him who is not able, let him feed sixty needy ones; that is in order that you may have faith in Allah and His Messenger, and these are Allah's limits, and the unbelievers shall have a painful punishment.

``THE PAGAN CUSTOM OF ZIHAR''
VERSE NO. 1-4
A Moslim, named AUS-IBN-SAMET, divorced his wife by an old Pagan Custom which was known as ``ZIHAR''. It consisted of saying to the wife:-``From now on you are as my mother.'' ZIHAR freed the husband from any matrimonial responsibility, but the wife could not leave her husband's home, or marry a second husband. The custom degraded woman cruelly.
The divorced wife complained to the prophet and prayed to God for her just plea which was accepted, and ZIHAR which was nothing more than a baseless and meaningless saying, was abolished.
The Pagan Custom of Zihar was indeed a nasty and unjust one of the Pagan Era, that tried to make way in Islam too, but it failed and was abrogated forever.
In order to prevent Moslims to return to such old custom, it was strictly forbidden, and a relatively heavy atonement was prescribed and fixed for those who would do it again. The expiation consisted of either freeing a slave, fasting two successive months, before reconcilation of the spouses; or feeding sixty poor persons.
