Women and Continuation of the Message of the Martyrs
Culture < Article <

Commemorating of the martyrs by women can be referred to as one of the cases of the women's political partnership. One habit of Hazrat Zahra’s (P), the daughter of the holy Prophet (P), was her special glorification of God after each prayer. After the battle of Uhud, she made a rosary from the earth of the graves of the martyrs of that battle and used it for praising God. Muslims follow her example and prepare rosaries out of the soil of the martyrs' graves and after each pryar recite her special glorification of God out of respect.

According to a tradition from Imam Al-Sadegh (P),”Every year,Hazrat Zahra (P) accompanied by a group of women made a pilgrimage to the graves of the martyrs and held prayer rituals. Her mourning on the death of the one of the martyrs, Jaafar Ebne Abi Talib and her taking care of his family is frequently mentioned in the history.

Fatemah (P), the behavioral model for ladies, also went frequently to Uhud and wept on the graves of the martyrs after the departure of the holy Prophet (P) and in this way she reminded society which had lost its political sensitivity that the holy Prophet’s (P)  Islamic government was the result of these great sacrifices and martyrdom.

Mahmud Ebne Labid says, ”One day I went to the martyrs cemetery, I found Fatemah (P) there, weeping on the grave of Hamzah. I waited for a moment until she was calm and said, ”O the lady of the women, the veins of my heart ruptured with your weeping … then she said to me, ”How strange, did you forget the day of Ghadir? ”Or Imam Ali (P) and his eleven successors and Imams. She then related the holy Prophet’s (P)  traditions and explained the deviation from the Islamic government and she finally added, ”I take refuge in God from deterioration and retro gradation".

People including women also narrate it from Imam Al-Sadegh (P) that after the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (P) there had been a great deal of emphasis on commemorating and paying tribute to Imam Hussain (P).

A woman named Umme Salid Ahmassiah says, ”I hired a horse to go and make pilgrimage of the martyrs in Medina, then I thought it would be better to first go and see the son of the holy Prophet (P) Imam Al-Sadegh (P). Therefore, I went to him to pay homage to him. The Imam (P) asked what the matter was and I said, ”May I sacrifice my life for you, I have hired a horse and come for pilgrimage to the graves of the martyrs". He said, ”How strange it is that you the citizens of Iraq come for pilgrimage to the martyrs graves from far away and forego the pilgrimage of the foremost of the martyrs". I said, ”Who is the foremost of the martyrs? ”He said, ”Hussain Ebne Ali (P)". I said, ”But I am a woman". He said, “What is wrong if you go for pilgrimage to the grave of Imam Hussain(p)? ”I said, ”What is the reward of that pilgrimage? ”He said, ”The reward of two major pilgrimage to Mecca, two minor pilgrimages to Mecca and two months of retreat to the Holy Mosque". ”He emphasized that if pilgrimage to the shrine of Imam Hussand (P) is accompanied with insight, it would have great rewards". The Imam (P) added truly the pilgrimage to Imam Hussain's Shrine is necessary for every man and woman".

The above-mentioned case was the evidence of the determination of wise and sincere women to convey the message of the martyrs and make them permanent. While if we study the issue of women and the results of Jihad (fighting for God) from another point of view, a more important subject is the state of the martyrs' wives and children to which special attention has been paid in Islam.

Imam Ali (P) says,”When Jaafar Ebne Abi Talib was martyred the holy Prophet (P) said to his own family to prepare some food, and take it to Jaafar's family, eat together and do their house works so that they might not think of doing their personal affairs".

After the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (P) too, while the women Bani Hashim wore black dress and were mourning Imam Al-Sajjad (P) was cooking for them.

It is also narrated that after the martyrdom of Zaid Ebn Ali (P), Imam Al-Sadegh allocated one thousand Dinars to the families of the martyrs of Zaid's uprising and paid an amount to each family.

As a good conclusion to this chapter, it is quoted from Imam Al-Sadegh,

"I wish a member of Muhammad's Household upraise and I would under take to provide the needs of his family".
